Commodity started with a Kickstarter in 2013: a global crowdfunding campaign “to change the fragrance industry forever”. Commodity Goods described premium fragrances without an overpowering scent or a retail markup. A spectrum of 20 intuitive, high quality fragrances with elemental names like Book, Moss, Gin created in collaboration with some of the world’s most accomplished artisans. Still sounds good doesn’t it?

Customers’ readiness for minimalist fragrances that speaks for themselves was palpable as future customers exceeded the $20K goal by more than double, raising $56K to bring the brand to life. Empowered by its connection to its fans, Commodity became the first direct-to-consumer fragrance brand.  To enable customers to try before they buy, Commodity would send samples for customers to test before they purchased their full-size bottle. A practice, we still uphold today with our Portfolio Set.

The demand even pulled Commodity offline and into all doors of beauty retail giant, Sephora. In 2015, the brand broke into 24 Sephora doors, where its high-quality elemental fragrances, unique positioning and celebration of perfumers set it apart.

But the brand grew too quickly. On March 31st, 2019, Commodity abruptly shuttered leaving its devoted customers in shock.

Also in shock was Vicken Arslanian, owner of Europerfumes, the leading US distributor of niche fragrances. In late 2019, Vicken decided to seize the immense opportunity left behind by Commodity and purchased the brand.

Episode six takes us to Symrise, a 200+ year company that produces flavors and fragrances for food and beauty brands worldwide. There Vicken sits – or should we say role plays -- with the Symrise team and Senior perfumer David Apel, aka Anderson Cooper, to explain the difference between developing “commercial” and “artisanal” fragrances.

The short answer? Artisanal fragrances are born out of an artistic exploration with a perfumer. One that aims to make the best olfactory scent possible.

Yeah, that’s the literal translation of those three little words on the front of your perfume bottle: Eau De Toilette.

We’re disposing of this old industry jargon for describing scent concentrations to give you more control over the projection of your scent, over the space the scent takes-up around you, over your “Scent Space”. Three new classifications regarding potency: Personal, Expressive, Bold.
